What’s in a name?

This is how my name looks when written in Chinese script. Apparently, even if it doesn’t really say ‘Dushyant’ I would never ever know. Though I would like to believe that it does.

When in line for getting this done, people ahead had a tough time getting their name understood by the guy who was brushing our names on parchments. Eric, Edna all had great difficulty in getting through.

At this point, I was sure that I would have to spend about an hour explaining the phonetics of my name. The Americans can never get my name right and I have given up trying. But I did not want him to misspell my name in a script I can’t even make out! So I prepared myself as to how I would go about pronouncing my name.

When it was my time, I shot my name in the air with complete expectations of him going “What is that?????” instead; he smiled and went to work.

I did not want to bug him so I let him be with his thick ass brush dipped in the blackest ink I have ever seen. When he was finished with my name, he handed the parchment and explained in broken English that my name in Chinese means “Good and Noble Virtues”, or it at least sounds like it.

This I found very amusing, knowing that the meaning of name when translated from Sanskrit means ‘End of all Evil’.

I have always liked my name.
