Not like this. Not like this.

At Monza, Michael Schumacher races to finish first and thereafter announces his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of this season.

I should have been sitting down for this.

Although, the news media were humming all about such news the last two weeks, I always believed that there was no reason for him to retire. Some stuck up F1 monkeys kept alluding to the fact that he has been making mistakes, but, I on the other hand, kept admiring his no nonsense approach and his sheer determination this season to catch up with Alonso. Ferrari now leads Constructor’s and he is only two points adrift of Alonso with three races to go.

As you can see, I am in serious denial over this decision.

This changes everything for me. I liked Ferrari only because he was racing them. I now no longer have a driver or a team to root for. Kimi and Alonso are as inspiring as a Toyota Camry. What will I do of my authentic Ferrari T shirt and Jacket? And who will I look forward for spiritual up-lift-ment. No longer would I need to get up early or stay up late to watch him blaze through his red Ferrari…

Michael embodied for me a man to emulate. And now, just like this, after all his staggering achievements, he will close shop. It doesn’t matter what made him take this decision(A Ferrari management forced decision, perhaps). That is mere semantics. All that matters is that today, I have lost a hero. A chunk of my life that occupied several Sundays for over eight years…

I wish I could say that is not Good Bye.

  • Formula 1 racing is not going to be the same again.I was never a Schumi fan…but somehow it feels next year without him, there will be a deep void in the sport!

  • Sid: Yes, Undoubtedly. I have no interest watching Alonso who has complained everytime he has lost a race.

    Ash: Sure you do…

Anon: Thanks. I did not mean to be funny although I was kidding about the jacket. Its a valued gift and will stay for with me forver.

  • If not like this, then how, DW? He’s leaving when fans are asking ‘why’, and not when they are asking ‘why not?’.

I think you are right about it being Ferrari-enforced. I think Kimi would’ve refused to play second fiddle to Schumi (admit it, there’s only one top dog at Ferrari) and they had to look at a future without him, unimaginable as it is.

Kimi is under-rated IMO. I’d take him over Alonso any day. Don’t change affiliations 🙂

  • There comes a time in every sport when history gets written. I think F1 has lost it sole source of inspiration for millions of aspiring and budding drivers world over. Ferrari has lost a brand – Schumacher. Although a very good F1 team, it would never be the same without him. I am only left with one question – for what will I turn on the TV when the next season begins?

  • Dear God(rolls eyes heavenwards).. Man! you and Neeraj should have a shok-sabha or something…and before you come tearing after me with a verbal lashing..please understand that for the greater good of F1 this is the right thing- races will be more interesting now that we shall speculate about “who comes first” instead of “who comes second”. Plus ,the newer lot is definitely more good looking :)(read Alonso)….okay,I guess I am going to get that verbal lashing ,am I not?
