Starry eyed and on a total high, I spent almost an entire day at the Detroit Motor show amongst spectacular four wheel wonders. Moving from manufacturer to manufacturer, I sustained orgasmic feelings throughout. When I finally stepped out of the COBO convention hall on to the cold black streets of Detroit, I blew the city a warm kiss.
But that apart, let’s get to the cars. Behind every machine lies a story. Here are some that stuck!
Possibly the most beautiful four door sedan I have even seen, the Aston Martin DB9 variant managed to invoke butterflies. As I made my way through the crowd and got a clear sight of the car, I was thoroughly dazed. She wore her lines exquisitely and not one inch looked out of proportion. I tried hard to see the door partitions in that poetry of side profile. The interiors glittered like jewellery while the leather offered a soft heavenly flow. For the first time, I considered the Aston Martin DB9 much prettier then the old generation Maserati Spyder.
In contrast, the Shelby 500 GT Mustang stood out like a brute like she always has. I like the new front and the obvious cobra on the grill! And who wouldn’t like the 500 horses that come at cost much lesser then equally powered super cars. I only wish Ford does something about that ghastly rear suspension.
The concept Camaro had a much better proportioned look and a better display of muscle. However, I was never a big fan of the Camaro. The Mustang, for me, will be always the first true American Muscle car!
From big engines with big horsepower to small engines with humongous turbo, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution manages to stun again and again with every version. A stunning four wheel drive coupled with 270 horses and light preppy chassis makes it a stunner to drive. However the revs have to be maintained to keep that turbo going and the ridiculous spoiler on the trunk cannot be removed without affect the stability of the vehicle.
And of course the musically throttled Ferrari’s! For a while now I did not like the Ferrari road cars but I have now come around. Make no mistake, despite the leather stitched interiors; the Ferraris are red blooded race machines. Every bit of styling exudes pace. There is an even on the steering wheel that simply says ‘race’. Not to mention the race gear paddles! Oh what joy!
Nothing is worse for a cars lateral stability then having an engine at the rear and driving the rear axle. But Porsche stuck to the design and built an empire of 911’s around that configuration. One of best handling cars ever made the Porsche strikes as a perfect example of magnificent German engineering. The accelerator-brake positioning was incredible making heel and toe drivers out of any one who buys that car!
So many more cars with so many more stories, The Detroit Motor Show will always remain one of the best ways of spending a day!
any news about the Ford reflex?
Wish I could’ve been there. My roomie at that time went in 2004, and I remember seeing the pics then and envying him. This is a pilgrimage that’ll have to be done sometime I guess.
Divi: To suppliers that work extensively for Ford, this is bad news. However most of us work for many customers, the Japanese and the Germans, both of which are doing very good business. Ford was a victim of the American Market. The best product wins!
Ajay: You must catch a show in Germany. I am sure more european makers would show up there!
